DEFINITIONS
BARNARDIUS
(Psittacidae; Ϯ Australian Ringneck B. zonarius barnardi) Edward Barnard (1786-1861) English civil servant, zoologist, horticulturalist, Agent-Gen. for the Crown Colonies 1825-1861 (cf. specific name Platycercus barnardi Vigors & Horsfield, 1827); "37. BARNARDIUS, Bp. — 168. Typicus, Bp. (Bernardi [sic], Lath.) — 169. Zonarius, Shaw. (Baueri, Gould.) — 170. Semitorquatus, Quoy et Gaim. (Zonarius, Gould nec Shaw.)" (Bonaparte 1854); "To see Barnard's Parrakeet in perfection, and to observe its rich plumage in all its glory, the native country of the bird must be visited, its brooks and streamlets traced; for it is principally on the banks of the latter, either among the "high-flooded gums" or the larger shrub-like trees along the edges of the water that this beautiful species is seen, and where the brilliant hues of its expanded wings and tail show very conspicuously as it passes from tree to tree amidst the dark masses of foliage." (Gould 1865); "BARNARDIUS Bonaparte, 1854 M— Barnardius typicus Bonaparte, 1854; type by virtual tautonymy = Platycercus barnardi Vigors and Horsfield, 1827" (Dickinson and Remsen (eds.), H. & M. Complete Checklist, 4th ed., 2013, 1 (Non-passerines), p. 376). The distinctive subspecies of this widespread parrot, the Port Lincoln Parrot B. z. zonarius, Twenty-eight Parrot B. z. semitorquatus, Mallee Ringneck B. z. barnardi, and Cloncurry Ringneck B. z. macgillivrayi are often considered to be separate species.
