(Trochilidae; Ϯ Chilean Woodstar E. yarrellii) Etymology undiscovered; (1) Eulidia occurs neither in Greek nor Roman myth.; (2) Gr. intensive prefix ευ- eu-; λειος leios smooth, soft (cf. Lydia, a renowned empire of Asia Minor famed for its culture and civilisation, said to be named from unattested Gr. λυδια ludia beauteous one (Joek Roex in litt.)); "LES EULIDIAIRES. ... Rectrices intermédiaires à externes de longueur presque égale, parallèles, étroites, allongées, terminées en pointe: les externes presque en forme de lame d'épée. Cette branche est réduite au genre suivant: Genre EULIDIA, EULIDIE, MULSANT. ... 1. EULIDIA YARELLI (LODDIGES), BOURCIER." (Mulsant & E. Verreaux 1877); "Eulidia Mulsant and E. Verreaux, Hist. Nat. Ois. Mouches, 4, 1877, p. 114. Type, by monotypy, Trochilus yarrellii Bourcier." (Peters, 1945, V, p. 138). The endangered Chilean Woodstar formerly occurred in southern Peru, but now can be found only in oases in northern Chile.
