DEFINITIONS
HIEROCOCCYX
(Cuculidae; Ϯ Hodgson's Hawk Cuckoo H. fugax) Gr. ἱεραξ hierax, ἱερακος hierakos hawk; κοκκυξ kokkux, κοκκυγος kokkugos cuckoo; "It is supposedly characterized by a short wing-tip, and the Accipiter-like barring of the tail also seems to have prompted its recognition." Nat. Gesch. Land- en Volk. p. 233, 1845. Type (by subsequent designation, Gray, 1855, p. 97): Cuculus fugax Horsf." (Mathews, 1927, Syst. Avium Austral., I, p. 406).
Var. Heirococcyx, Hieracococcyx, Hiracococcyx ("HIRACOCOCCYX*) Müll. 1842. — Habichtskuckuk. Hierococcyx (!) Müll. 1842. ... (Cabanis & Heine 1862)).
