(Columbidae; Ϯ Thick-billed Ground Pigeon T. terrestris) Gr. τρυγων trugōn, τρυγονος trugonos  pigeon  < τρυζω truzō  to murmur; "APPENDIX.  ...  Probably to this subfamily belongs: Trugon terrestris Homb. & Jacq., Voy. au Pole Sud, Ois. t. 28. f. 1.  (I have not seen this bird.)" (G. Gray 1849); "par son bec le genre Trugon se rapproche des Colombars. Cet organe est intermédiaire chez lui, sous le point de vue de la grosseur, entre les espèces ordinaires de Vinago et le genre Butreron" (Jacquinot & Pucheran 1853); "Trugon G. R. Gray, Gen. Bds., 3, 1849, app., p. 24. Type, by monotypy, Trugon terrestris Hombron and Jacquinot = G. R. Gray." (Peters 1937, III, 137).
