DEFINITIONS
DUBUSIA
(Thraupidae; † Buff-breasted Mountain Tanager D. taeniata) Bernard Aimé Léonard Vicomte Dubus de Ghisignies (1808-1874) Belgian politician, patron of the sciences; "2. (Bonaparte 1850); Heine & Reichenow, 1890, Nomencl. Musei Heineani Ornith., p. 19, regarded Dubusia as a barbarous name, but, uncharacteristically, did not offer any alternative or replacement; "Dubusia Bonaparte, Compt. Rend. Acad. Sci. Paris, 31, p. 424, 1850—type, by virtual orig. desig., 1 Dubusia selysia Bonaparte = Tanagra selysia Bonaparte. ... 1Although a number of other species are mentioned as pertaining to the genus, only the above is listed in combination with the new generic title." (Hellmayr, 1936, Cat. Birds Americas, Pt. IX, p. 197); "Hellmayr (1936 ... proposes the acceptance of Dubusia selysia = Tanagra selysia as type of the genus Dubusia by "virtual orig. desig." as being the sole species in the original account whose specific name was there listed in combination with the new generic name. I doubt the validity of this claim. In the first place, the name taeniata is listed also in combination with Dubusia, and even if taeniata and selysia are synonymous, as appears to be the case, Bonaparte did not consider them as such and did not specify either as the type. In any case, seven other species are assigned by Bonaparte to Dubusia, albeit without formally combining the specific and the new generic names, and any one of them is available as type. To avoid any possibility of confusion or undue change in accepted nomenclature, I hereby designate Dubusia selysia (Bonaparte) = Tanagra selysia Bonaparte as type of the genus Dubusia Bonaparte, 1850." (J. T. Zimmer 1944); "Dubusia Bonaparte, 1850, Compt. Rend. Acad. Sci. Paris, 31, p. 424. Type, by subsequent designation (Zimmer, 1944, Amer. Mus. Novit., no. 1262, p. 9), Dubusia selysia (Bonaparte) = Tanagra selysia Bonaparte = Tanagra (Tachyphonus) taeniata Boissonneau." (Storer in Peters, 1970, XIII, p. 338).
