(Hirundinidae; Ϯ Northern Rough-winged Swallow S. serripennis) Gr. στελγις stelgis, στελγιδος stelgidos  strigil, scraper; πτερυξ pterux, πτερυγος pterugos  wing; "Each will form the type of a special division, of at least sub-generic value, with the following characters  ...  STELGIDOPTERYX, Baird. - Tarsi naked. Edge of outer primary with the fibrillae converted into a series of stiffened recurved hooks.  Above light sooty brown; the under parts brownish ash, fading behind into white.  S. serripennis.  ...  COTYLE SERRIPENNIS, Bonap.  Rough-winged Swallow.  ...  Tail slightly emarginate; first primary with the pennulae of the outer web much stiffened, with their free extremities recurved into a hook very appreciable to the touch" (Baird 1858); "Stelgidopteryx [subgenus] Baird, 1858, in Baird, Cassin and Lawrence, Rep.
