DEFINITIONS

CLYTOLAEMA
(Trochilidae; Ϯ Brazilian Ruby C. rubricauda) Gr. κλυτος klutos  glorious  < κλεω kleō  to celebrate; λαιμος laimos  throat; "CLYTOLÆMA RUBINEA. Brazilian Ruby.   ...   Besides being one of the commonest birds in our collections, the Clytolæma rubinea is also one of the most beautiful members of its lovely family, and is rendered eminently conspicuous in the group by its rich ruby-coloured throat, surrounded by equally glittering green.  Mr. Reeves informs me that its local name is "Papa de Fogo," and that the old bird utters a loud cry resembling the syllables Tirr-tirr-tirr" (Gould 1853); "Clytolaema Gould, Monogr. Trochil., pt. 6, Oct., 1853, pl. [2] and text [= 4, pl. 249 of volume]. Type, by monotypy, Trochilus rubineus Gmelin = Trochilus rubricauda Boddaert." (Peters, 1945, V, p. 86).
