DEFINITIONS

CAIRINA
(Anatidae; Ϯ Muscovy Duck C. moschata) Doubtless based on “Anas Cairina” and “Cairo-Duck,” names given to the Muscovy Duck by Aldrovandus 1599, in the mistaken belief that it came from Egypt (Italian Cairino  Cairene, native of Cairo). Although widely found in domesticity, this duck comes neither from Muscovy, the Russian heartland, nor Egypt, but from tropical America; "2. Hind toe without a border.  A papillous skin at the base of the bill.  205. CAIRINA.  Musk-duck.  Face and cheeks with a coloured warty skin.  Anas moschata." (Fleming 1822); "Cairina Fleming, Philos. Zoöl., 2, 1822, p. 260. Type, by monotypy, Anas moschata Linné." (Peters, 1931, I, p. 155).
Var. Cairinia.
Synon. Gymnathus, Hyonetta, Moscha, Moschatus.
