(Accipitridae; Ϯ Hooded Vulture N. monachus) Gr. νεκρος nekros corpse, dead; συρω surō to drag; "Eine oder zwei Arten davon (Neophron!!) sind gleichfalls braun, hierin also jenen der neuen Welt noch ähnlich; dabei kaum größer, als Bussarde, mit ziemlich kurzem und geradem Schwanze. Z. B. der, bisher so genannte Mönchsgeier. (Cath. monachus; Necrosyrtes m.)" (Gloger 1841); "Necrosyrtes Gloger, Hand-u. Hilfsb. Naturg., 1842 (1841), p. 236.
