(Rallidae; Ϯ Spot-flanked Gallinule P. melanops crassirostris) Genus Porphyrio Brisson 1760, swamphen; Gr. ωψ ōps, ωπος ōpos appearance; "Un troisième genre (PORPHYRIOPS, Porphyriops) nous est offert par les espèces américaines qui présentent un bec presque aussi élevé que celui des Porphyrions, mais plus comprimé, ce qui les rapproche de la Marouette, dont les éloigne, au contraire, l'ampleur de leur pouce. L'individu figuré par M. J. E. Gray, dans l'édition anglaise du Règne animal de Cuvier, sous le nom de Fulica crassirostris, peut être considéré comme le type de cette troisième division." (Pucheran 1845). This genus was formerly included in Gallinula (see Sangster et al. 2015). Var. Porphyreops.

In early ornithology “Bogotá” was used to designate a species of unknown provenance but, from the distinctive way in which the trade-skin had been prepared, presumed to be from the Spanish Main (= Spanish-held Mainland), the hinterland of north-western tropical America.
