DEFINITIONS

CORVINELLA
(Laniidae; Ϯ Yellow-billed Shrike C. corvina) Dim. < specific name Lanius corvinus Shaw, 1809. “This bird, which Monsr. Levaillant considers as a species of Shrike, might perhaps with equal propriety be arranged under the genus Corvus  ...  the general appearance of the bird indicates a strong alliance to the longtailed kind of Corvi.” (Shaw 1809); "Sous-genre. CORVINELLE; Corvinella.  Bec haut, très-comprimé, court, crochu. Narines latérales, ailes courtes. Queue longue, étagée.  (Sous-genre africain.)  PIE-GRIÈCHE CORVINE; Lanius corvinus, Shaw.  Levaill., Afriq., pl. 78." (Lesson 1831); "Corvinella Lesson, 1831, Traité d'Orn., p. 372. Type, by monotypy, Lanius corvinus Shaw." (Rand in Peters, 1960, IX, p. 341).  In the merry-go-round of shrike taxonomy, recent work indicates that this genus should be subsumed in Lanius.
