(Alcedinidae; Ϯ Hook-billed Kingfisher M. macrorrhina) Perhaps from Gr. μηλις mēlis yellow; δορυ doru spear, in allusion to the heavy yellow bill of the Hook-billed Kingfisher; "VII.e Sous-genre. MÉLIDORE; Melidora. Bec robuste, énorme, très-large, à mandibule supérieure terminée en pointe ou crochet hameçonné; l'inférieure légèrement renflée; une double arête en ressant sur la voûte de la mandibule supérieure; narines en fente longitudinale peu apparente; le tour des yeux nu; des poils ou cils rigides couvrant la naissance du bec; ailes amples, queue médiocre. Observ. La seule espèce connue habite la Nouvelle-Guinée. MÉLIDORE d'EUPHROSINE; Melidora Euphrosiæ: Dacelo macrorhinchus, Less., Zool. de la Coq., pl. 31bis, fig. 2."
