(Aegithalidae; Ϯ Long-tailed Tit A. caudatus) Gr. αιγιθαλος aigithalos tit; three different species of tits were recognised under this name by Aristotle: the Long-tailed Tit, the Great Tit, and the European Blue Tit; "PIPRA? EUROPAEA. Nobis. Nigra, pileo subtusque alba, cauda forficata, rectricibus lateralibus brevioribus, margine exteriore albis. Rostro sane neque fringilla, neque motacilla, neque parus: sed cum pipra rostrum magis convenit. Non autem pedibus, qui non sunt gressorii. Cauda forficata, extima rectrice brevissima, penultima brevi, tertia longiore, tribus his margine exteriore albis, sed obscurius in tertia. Statura motacillae trochili. Pedes altiusculi. ... Si novum genus mereatur, Aegithalos vocari poterit." (Hermann 1804); "Aegithalos Hermann, 1804, Observ. Zool., p. 214.
