Gen. char.— Rostrum capite longius, deorsum curvatum, et paululum apud basin depressum. Alæ breves, debiles. Cauda mediocris, furcata. Tarsi plumis induti, parvis, mollibus. Gr. γλαυκος glaukos blue-grey, glaucous; ωψ ōps, ωπος ōpos face (cf. γλαυκωπις glaukōpis, γλαυκωπιδος glaukōpidos with gleaming eyes; L. glaucopis, glaucopidis grey-eyed, an epithet of Minerva and the owl).

Bonaparte appears to have confused Trochilus glaucopis Gm. and the genus Glaucis, both referred to by Boie 1831, Isis, col. 545; "a. Florisugeæ. ... 1570. Thalurania, Gould. (Glaucopis, Boie, nec Gm.)" (Bonaparte 1854) (nom. nud.).
