DEFINITIONS
PLATYLOPHUS
(Platylophidae; Ϯ Crested Jay P. galericulatus) Gr. πλατυς platus broad, wide; λοφος lophos crest; "We consider the Geai longup of Le Vaillant* (G. Platylophus, Sw.,) as representing that form in the circle of Thamnophilinæ which conducts us to Malaconotus, Sw. ... *We cannot discover to what genus our nomenclators have consigned this bird. It is the Garrulus gallericulatus of the Ency. Méth.; but in the Paris Museum it is placed, with much more propriety, among the Malaconoti. There can be little doubt of its being the scansorial type of its own sub-family. ... 3. Genus, PLATYLOPHUS. Rostrum robustum, ad basin vibrissis longissimis rigidis, et plumis capistri antrorsum producti rigidis recumbentibus tectum. Vertex cristatus. Pedes validi; digitus medius abbreviatus, halluce paulo brevior; digiti laterales sub-æquales, externus ad basin distinctus; ungues validi, acuti. Alæ et rectrices rotundatæ, hæ seta brevi desinentes. ... Type.— Garrulus galericulatus, VIEILL. (Vanga, CUV.)" (Swainson 1831). It is thought that the Crested Jay, formerly considered a member of the Corvidae, is a monofamilial primitive ally of the Laniidae close to Eurocephalus. Alternative names to reflect this relationship include Shrike-jay and Crested Black-shrike.
