(Ploceidae; Ϯ Scaly-fronted Weaver S. squamifrons) Gr. σπορος sporos seed < σπειρω speirō to sow; οπιπευω opipeuō to gaze, to stare at; "Sporopipes (σπορος, Saame; οπιπτευω, lüstern nach etwas gaffen) scheint, abgesehen von der Kleinheit des Typus, durch Bildung der Charaktere und Färbung des Gefieders am nächsten mit Philetaerus verwandt, unterscheidet sich von dieser Gattung aber genügend durch kürzeren, weniger zusammengedrückten Schnabel und das Vorhandensein der 1sten Schwinge, welche länger als bei den Spermestinen ist. Der Schwanz ist kürzer als die Flügel, ziemlich gerade, schwach ausgerandet. Typus: Sp. lepidopterus. Fringilla lepidoptera Licht." (Cabanis 1847); "Sporopipes Cabanis, 1847, Arch. f.
