DEFINITIONS
OXYRUNCUS
(Tityridae; Ϯ Sharpbill O. cristatus) Gr. οξυς oxus sharp; ῥυγχος rhunkhos bill; "OXYRINQUE, Oxyruncus. (Temm.) — Caract. Bec court, droit, triangulaire à sa base, très-effilé en alène à la pointe. Narines basales, latérales comme les torcols. ... Ce serait un Torcol s'il avait les pieds de ces oiseaux d'Amérique méridionale" (Temminck 1820); “The single genus ... is at once recognizable from the Tyrannidae by its straight, sharp-pointed bill, which is beset on the lores and front and under the chin by numerous small and short bristly feathers” (P. Sclater 1888); "OXYRUNCUS Temminck, 1820 M — Oxyrhynchus flammiceps Temminck, 1822; type by subsequent monotypy (G. R. Gray, 1840, A List of the Genera of Birds, p. 17). = Oxyrhyncus cristatus Swainson, 1921" (Dickinson & Christidis (eds.) 2014, 17). The Sharpbill is an enigmatic bird of disjunct distribution and uncertain taxonomic position, formerly treated in the Tyrannidae or as a separate family Oxyruncidae, which may also include Onychorhynchus, Myiobius and Terenotriccus.

Synon. Oxyrhamphus.

C. gutturalis and C. gularis, all of them having brown heads and olive-green backs" (Sharpe 1877) (Alophoixus).
● "The difference in color appears very slight. I attach more importance to the discrepancies in size and proportions. If the Pacific bird be really distinct from the American, it has probably yet to receive a name; for it is very different from the various species of Anous mostly described by Mr. Gould. In that event, it may be called a ANOUS FRATER." (Coues 1862) (syn. Anous stolidus pileatus).

● "Similar to T. solstitialis, but differs in the eyebrow and eyelid being white instead of rufous or buff, and in the whiter axillaries and under wing-coverts. ...
