DEFINITIONS

ORNORECTES
(Oreoicidae; Ϯ Piping Bellbird O. cristatus) Gr. ορνυω ornuō  to call forth; genus Rectes Reichenbach, 1850, pitohui; "ORNORECTES gen. nov.  Type, cristatus Salvadori 1875 (Rectes).  ...  The CRESTED WOOD-SHRIKE (Ornorectes cristatus) is an aberrant form, in that, while it retains the red brown colouring throughout life, it has developed a well-formed crest, and ranges throughout the mountains of New Guinea, without much variation. The bill is shorter and stouter, well developed rictal bristles are present, the crest is full from the forehead, the wings and tail are about the same length as in Pitohui, but the latter comparatively shorter and more wedge shaped. To indicate that these differences probably suggest distinct origin, the new generic name Ornorectes is introduced with cristatus as type, and this may be later attached to Amblyornis" (Iredale 1956). The Piping Bellbird was formerly known as Crested Pitohui, and considered allied to the Pachycephalidae or the Colluricinclidae; recent work suggests that it should be included in Oreoica.
