DEFINITIONS
CARPOSPIZA
(Passeridae; † Pale Sparrow C. brachydactyla) Portmanteau of genera Carpodacus Kaup, 1829, rosefinch, and Corospiza Bonaparte, 1850, sparrow; "CARPOSPIZA, de MULL. Rostrum robustum, pirrhulaceum, conico-elongatum; maxilla basi gibbosa; dente medio acuto, cauda brevis alas ultra parum producta. La forme du bec, qui offre des caractères si particuliers, a rendu nécessaire la création de ce nouveau genre. Le bec est très-fort et se rapproche le plus de ceux des genres Corospiza Bp. et Carpodacus Kaup; mais il s'en distingue éminemment par une dent placée au milieu de la mandibule supérieure et par une gibbosité au-dessus des narines. Carpospiza longipennis, de Mull. Pyrenestes lacteus, v. Müll. Naumannia, 1851, IV, p. 25." (von Müller 1854) (OD per Mark Brown); "Carpospiza Müller, 1854, Descr. Ois. Afr. [Beiträge zur Ornithologie Afrika's], 3, pl. 10. Type, by monotypy, C. longipennis Müller = Petronia brachydactyla Bonaparte." (Greenway in Peters, 1962, XV, p. 23); "Carpospiza brachydactyla (Pale Rockfinch), which has recently been shown not to be part of the sparrows but, instead, represents an early branch in the phylogeny of the Motacillidae family." (Fjeldså, Christidis & Ericson (eds.) 2020). Laurent Raty in litt. suggests that this bird may warrant familial separation.
