Ce Genre, dont le nom rappelle le Héron (Ardea) et l'Outarde (Otis), est caractérisé par un bec long, droit, seulement un peu recourbé vers la pointe. L' ARDÉOTIDE LOHONG (Ardeotis Arabs, d'Is. Geoffroy; Otis Arabs, de Gmelin; Eupodotis Arabs, de Lesson) habite l'Afrique méridionale et l'Asie" (Le Maout 1853); "Ardeotis Le Maout, 1853, Hist. Nat. Oiseaux, pp. 339, 340.
