DEFINITIONS
HYPOCOLIUS
(Hypocoliidae; Ϯ Hypocolius H. ampelinus) Gr. ὑπο hupo somewhat, behind; genus Colius Brisson 1760, mousebird. In ornithology colius can also signify starling (e.g. Coccycolius, Lamprocolius ), and as late as 1930 W. Sclater tentatively placed the Hypocolius in the Sturnidae. It is currently considered to be part of a global-scatter including the waxwings Bombycillidae, the silky-flycatchers Ptiliogonatidae, the Palmchat Dulidae, and the Hawaiian honeyeaters Mohoidae; "*726. Hypocolius, Bp. (Ptilogonys, p. Auct.) Genus forsan ad Volucres spectans: medium quasi inter Colios et Cotingas! America s. 1. *H. ampelinus, Bp. Mus. Lugdun. ex California." (Bonaparte 1850); "Hypocolius Bonaparte, 1850, Consp. Av., 1, p. 336. Type, by monotypy, Hypocolius ampelinus Bonaparte." (Greenway in Peters, 1960, IX, p. 373).
ampelina / ampelinus
● Genus Ampelis Linnaeus, 1766, waxwing. Bonaparte 1850, considered the Grey Hypocolius to be intermediate between the colies and the cotingas, but included it next to the waxwings in the subfamily Ampelinae (Hypocolius).
● Specific name Hypocolius ampelinus Bonaparte, 1850. This form of the White-collared Yuhina was so-named because of its superficial resemblance to the Grey Hypocolius (subsp. Yuhina diademata).
